The management of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and in general of rare disorders in Greece is insufficient and fragmentary.First of all it is essential to recognise the importance of these conditions.Then to organize their management at all levels,including the application of clinical and laboratory training programs. The quality control of the provided services as well as determining the rules that will govern the operation of centers engaged in the diagnosis and follow up, both clinical and laboratory, of patients with IEM.

About IEM
The term Inborn Errors of Metabolism was used for the first time by Sir Archibald Garrod in his speech at the Royal College of Physicians of London reffering to the first 4 diseases to be classified in this group.
Today more than 500 different Inborn Errors of Metabolism have been described,a number that is continuously increasing.
It is estimated that 20% of the hereditary genetic diseases are metabolic disorders.
